Shuri Castle  首里城

Shuri Castle is a majestic symbol of the Ryukyu Kingdom’s enduring legacy. Located in Naha, Okinawa and built over 600 years ago, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was once home to kings and served as an administrative center for centuries – its walls retaining countless stories from days long past. A testament to resilience and strength, Shuri Castle provides insight into what it must have been like living among royalty during Okinawan antiquity.

On October 31, 2019, Shuri Castle caught fire and was extensively damaged. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is believed to have been caused by a technical malfunction. The main hall, Seiden, and other buildings were completely destroyed, leaving only the stone walls standing. The Japanese government and local authorities have since been working to rebuild the castle, with the aim of restoring it to its former glory.

The palace was reopened for public in November 2020, but some parts of the castle are still under reconstruction.

Access: Take the Yui Rail bound for Shuri from Naha Airport Station and get off at Shuri Station. It takes about 30 minutes and costs 330 yen. 15 minutes walk from Shuri Station to Shuri Castle.

Churaumi Aquarium  美ら海水族館

The Churaumi Aquarium is a must-see destination when visiting Okinawa, Japan! Nakijin Castle Ruins  今帰仁城跡

The majestic Nakijin Castle is a unique reminder of the Ryukyu Kingdom, dating back to the 14th century. Built on top of an imposing limestone hill, this gusuku (castle) still stands tall today, offering visitors a glimpse into Okinawa’s proud history and culture. Though it has been partially destroyed by time, the castle went through various restorations, including most recently in the mid-1800s by King Shō Tai. Inside the castle are a number of gates and towers, as well as an old pond and well that still remain from ancient times.

Cape Manzamo  万座毛

The Okinawa World おきなわワールド

Okinawa Peace Memorial Park 沖縄平和祈念公園

The Okinawa Peace Memorial Park, located in Itoman City on the main island of Okinawa, opened on June 23rd, 1995. The park serves as a symbol of everlasting peace and hope for Japan and all humanity. It is dedicated to those who lost their lives during World War II the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, and honors all victims of war throughout history.

The Park consists of a Peace Memorial Museum, the Cornerstone of Peace (which contains the names of some 240,000 people who died during the Battle, including both Japanese and non-Japanese casualties), a peace memorial hall, and several monuments and sculptures. The Park also has gardens and lawns for visitors to relax in.

The Nakagusuku Castle Ruins 中城城

The Nakagusuku Castle Ruins in Okinawa are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and an impressive example of Ryukyuan gusuku architecture. Dating back to the 14th century, this fortress was once home to the powerful Aji rulers of Okinawa.
