Shukkeien Garden: A Tranquil Escape 縮景園

As I strolled through this historic Japanese garden, dating back to 1620, I felt a deep sense of peace.
The Kanji for this gardenname is 縮景園, means “shrinked scenery garden”, and it’s said that the name derives from the fact that it was created by reducing the scenery of West Lake in Zhejiang Province, China.
The meticulously landscaped paths and tranquil ponds offered a perfect retreat from the bustling city. I savored a light snack at the tea house, allowing myself to be enveloped by the garden’s Edo-period elegance.

Originally constructed in 1589 by Terumoto Mori, this flatland castle is strategically located on the delta of the Ota River. Though it was destroyed by the atomic bomb on August 6, 1945, the main keep was reconstructed in 1958. Today, it houses a museum dedicated to the castle’s rich history, offering visitors a fascinating journey through time. There is also a section where you can wear armor and helmets and take commemorative photos!

Installed in 1964 within the Peace Memorial Park, this bell embodies the wish for nuclear disarmament and everlasting peace. Visitors are encouraged to ring the bell, allowing its resonant sound to echo the shared hope for a peaceful future.

The views from the tower were stunning, providing a peaceful spot to relax. However, the entrance fee of 2200 yen felt a bit steep, making me ponder the value of such experiences.

Okonomimura: A Culinary Adventure

This vibrant building, with its 24 okonomiyaki restaurants, was a culinary playground. I relished a mochi and cheese-filled okonomiyaki, a nostalgic nod to my high school days. The lively atmosphere and the joy of watching the chefs cook on the teppan grill made for an unforgettable dining experience. Sharing stories with a tourist from Brazil added a delightful international flavor to my evening.
